Larksfield Steinway Recital Series - Friends University’s Dr. James Knight

Dr. James Knight was born in Wichita, Kansas where he studied piano from Lucille Hayden and Guy Johnson.  During his undergraduate years he won the Naftzger Piano Award and the Kansas Cultural Trust Award enabling him to study in New York City.  In New York, he went to Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under Constance Keene.  In 1990 and 1996 respectively, he earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from this institution.  At this time, he took master classes from John Perry, Aube Tzerko, Bela Nagy, Byron Janis, Karl Ulrich Schnabel, and Joaquin Soriano.  Dr. Knight was a finalist in the Leschetizky Piano Competition and also performed at Steinway Hall in New York City. He has performed at the national American Liszt Society Festival and performs frequently at the Chamber Music at the Barn series.   Dr. Knight is now in his 23nd year of teaching at Friends University, where he is an assistant professor of piano.  He also teaches Music History 1 and 2, Form and Analysis, and Keyboard Ensemble.  Dr. Knight has also had several prizewinning students in local competitions including the WMMTA piano concerto auditions and the Miller Concerto Auditions.
